2024 and Going

Challenging, exiting, happy, sad, educational are just some of the words to describe the happenings at MFHG.

Challenging times:

We have gone through many ups and downs; challenges we have never faced before.

We have had young adults wake us up at 2am to let us know they are in jail and can we bail them out?

caller: We have a collect call from________ at the county jail will you accept charges?

us: What? from where? for who? HUH!, yes we accept charges

young adult: I'm in jail for____________can you come get me?

us: what time is it? are you for real? (some hemming and hawing) fine we'll be there in a few.

young adult: thanks

It was very sad to see our judicial system at work. It is my opinion there is only a handful or attorneys assigned by the court that give a "hoot" about their client. I had the opportunity to meet the different kinds. In one case this attorney was not even in the court when we showed up with the young adult, the attorney was in another county and after waiting for hours send their assistant for a continuance. This attorney never met with the client before OH! let me rephrase that on the 3rd time in court the young adult was given five minutes to meet with the attorney! was there any preparation? was there any clarification done as to what was told to the young adult vs what is now being said?

On the third time around (it was the prayers of many in our organization) that shifted the tide and the judge took over, oversaw the case and asked why was our young adult even in court?

The other attorney I had the privilege to meet had met with the young adult several times and was offering suggestions on how and what to say in court, how to dress. He offered scenarios and the outcomes of each scenario. I felt he was preparing our young adult emotionally. After speaking with this attorney, I can say whoever else gets him is blessed because he actually cares for his clients.

Happy and Sad:

One of our young adults "left the nest". This young adult was with MFHG for a year and half. Wanted to travel and see the country, was able to get a job with a company that does exactly that, they move to different locations where they are contracted for specific jobs.

It was sad to see this person leave, but I pray that MFHG taught life lessons which will help as they go forward.

Educational:

MFHG gave its first educational scholarship to a young adult. This young adult will be finishing their education shortly and it is our prayer this leads to a better job, better living conditions and to become a productive citizen of our society.
